In the worst case, coronary heart disease can lead to myocardial infarction. Timely treatment and above all prevention, can prevent this.

Cardiovascular diseases are still the most frequent cause of death in Germany today. One of these possible diseases is coronary heart disease. When you can occur, it is hard to predict, and that makes it so dangerous. However, there are risk groups, which should be particularly vigilant in case of possible symptoms.

Coronary heart disease is not associated with any particular age. The fact is, however, that the risk of coronary heart disease, in short CHD, increases with the aging. If further complications develop, there may even be a heart attack or sudden cardiac death.

Coronary heart disease - what is it?

For supplying the heart with oxygen, our blood vessels are responsible. If the blood vessels are narrowed or even closed, the heart can no longer be adequately supplied with nutrients - medically, coronary heart disease is mentioned here.

Forms of coronary heart disease

The signs and course of CHD are not the same for each patient. In this aspect, three forms of coronary heart disease are also distinguished:

Mute coronary heart disease (asymptomatic)
- largely without typical symptoms and discomfort
Stable coronary heart disease
- repetitive short-term pain
Acute coronary heart disease
- ascending symptoms and pain up to the severe constriction of the coronary vessels
Symptoms for coronary heart disease

If, as with a silent coronary heart disease, no or only few symptoms occur, it is more difficult to make a diagnosis. More often, however, there are signs that require immediate action:

Pain in the chest
Pain in the shoulder area / arm
Strong exhaustion during movement
difficulty in breathing
Anxiety and panic
Pain in the upper abdomen
pale skin
Swollen feet
Treatment for coronary heart disease

In case of acute coronary heart disease, immediate action must be taken - Call a rescue vehicle! If you notice any of the above symptoms, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. The physician will examine you at the most (ECG under rest and load, ultrasound examination of the neck vessels, blood count).

If a constriction of the blood vessels is detected, the following treatment options can be used:

+ Drug Therapy

Treatment with medication is the "easy" stage of the first attempt to stop the perfect constriction of the blood vessels. Drugs are also used for long-term therapy. Depending on the patient, ACE inhibitors, ASA, beta-blockers and statins are prescribed. Further information about the medicines and their effects on health information.

+ Operational interventions

Reaching medication and the change of the way of life (to be more later), not out, the blood vessel constriction must be counteracted operationally.

»Coronary balloon angioplasty or balloon dilatation
With the percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, PTCA, narrowing of the coronary vessels can be widened. For this purpose, a catheter, on which a balloon is located, is advanced through the skin to the narrowest point of the vessel. Now the doctor can inflate the balloon and thus expand the vessel frame.

A stent implant is a small tube used as a support for the narrowed vessel. It serves almost to keep the vessel open. The stent implant is still folded during the operative procedure and is only deployed at the affected site.

If there are several vessel constrictions in a patient, the stent or balloon is often not sufficient. To prevent a heart attack, a bypass operation is performed. For this purpose, corporeal, healthy vessels, for example from the leg vein, are used. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and often takes several hours as the chest must be opened.

The coronary heart disease is chronic, that is, those affected will have to adjust to a permanent treatment, even if they are symptom-free. In addition to the psychological burden, the expenditure on medication and the occasional repeated hospital stays in the year, also financial charges on the patient. Even if the statutory health insurance funds take over the basic care, who would like chief physician treatment or fears a wage failure with prolonged sick leave, should think about an additional hedge.

+ Change of lifestyle

A coronary heart disease does not come by chance. Those who are affected should urgently think about their way of life.

Are you a smoker? Nicotine is a poison to your blood vessels - it's best to stop immediately!
Movement promotes blood circulation - drive daily sport!
Overweight harms your overall health - down with the pounds!
Avoid animal fats - bring lots of fresh vegetables to the table!
Keep your blood pressure under control - Mediterranean diet, sports, no smoking!
Coronary heart disease prevent

To protect yourself from narrowing of the vessels, you can do a lot yourself. The above-mentioned conversion of your living conditions, is the first preventative measure against coronary heart disease. In addition, diabetes mellitus patients should regularly see their control visits to the doctor. If you feel fit and healthy, it is not inevitable. Therefore, go to the free check-up examinations. These are already available from the age of 35 (see
